Before the first draft

Set up the work so the work can be done well.

Students often rush from seeing a passage to producing a translation. Preparation slows the first minute, then saves many minutes later.

A prepared passage has been checked, divided, and oriented. The reader knows where the sentence begins, what context matters, and which words or forms may need attention.

Preparation routine

  • Verify the imported or captured text before analysing it.
  • Divide the passage into sentences or workable units.
  • Read the title, author, speaker, and situation if available.
  • Mark obvious names, places, repeated words, and difficult forms.

Preparation is not delay. It is the first act of reading.
