A final translation can be right for the wrong reasons or wrong for one small reason. Reviewing the process lets a teacher respond to the real work.

Better feedback

The strongest feedback points to a decision.

“Good translation” and “incorrect translation” are often too broad to teach much. A more useful comment names the exact decision: a case reading, a verb tense, a word attachment, a missing subject, an over-smoothed phrase.

When notes, tags, and drafts remain visible, the teacher can see where the student’s understanding changed.

Questions that reveal method

  • Which annotation changed your translation?
  • Where did you keep two possibilities open?
  • Which word in the Latin justifies this phrase?
  • What did you revise between the close draft and the final draft?

The final sentence is evidence. The process explains what kind of evidence it is.

Students learn that translation is not a secret talent but a sequence of choices that can be discussed. That makes feedback less personal and more useful: the work can be repaired because the work can be seen.
